Abstract

The present study analysed the relationship between character strengths and the presence of emotional symptoms, hyperactivity, and prosocial behaviours in children who attend 4th, 5th and 6th-grade elementary school in the Valley of Mexico. This was a non-experimental, cross-sectional, correlational study. To accomplish this, a non-probabilistic sample of 536 children (52.4% boys and 47.6% girls), with an average age of 10.5 years was selected. Two scales were applied: The Character Strengths Inventory for Children and the Abilities and Difficulties Questionnaire. The results provided evidence of adequate psychometric functioning for both instruments, and differences were analysed by sex and school grade. In addition, significant correlations were found between character strengths and emotional symptoms, hyperactivity, and prosocial behaviours.
